My experience with the Web Conference....

Today I participated in my first Web Conference in this class. We were experiencing several technical difficulties so we only used the Chat feature. Something was wrong with the chat window, for it continued to grow small then large, making it difficult to keep up with the many entries coming in. Using technology a great deal on my campus, I have learned to be extremely patient and realize with that many users logged in, it would make the situation even more taxing. I did get a great deal of information on the LCE which I am taking this weekend, so that was a great help. I found out that in this late in the game we do not need to purchase the T20 software for the Portfolio, but I am looking forward to reading the transcript to get more information on that. I have used Web conferencing in other situations and I think it is a great tool and plan on coaching my teachers on campus to try it out more often.

Technology Update Star Chart Report

Blog Posting Three:

On March 5, 2010 the U.S. Department of Education released a draft of the National Educational Technology Plan: Transforming American Education: Learning Powered by Technology.” The Plan describes how information and communication technologies can help transform American education. It provides goals to inform state and local educational technology plans, and recommendations to inspire research, development, and innovation.

The NETP has five goals that that address learning, assessment, teaching, infrastructure and productivity. In this plan, it has recommendations for states and their school districts and for the federal government to recognize problems and situations that may occur. These problems are not limited to funding and coordination of the programs involved. In learning, we must use “technology to create engaging, relevant, and personalized learning experiences for all learners that mirror students’ daily lives and the reality of their futures.” This plan urges educators to use technology and take it to the next level that will impact our students, not only teaching them the standards, but then go above and beyond that and motivate those students with the ways in which they best learn, through current modes of technology.

With current teaching methods, “technology can help us build the capacity of educators by enabling a shift to a model of connected teaching.” More than ever before students are connected to the world around them through technology. We need to encourage our educators to build on what they know students appreciate and help guide them through the process of using technology to teach these students. Teachers need to be aware of the knowledge and experience of using technology to fully engage students in and out of the classroom. We need to budget for technology, encouraged staff development for teaching staff members about technology and its uses.

Blog Posting Two:

Federal and state law mandates that states and their school districts report progress toward technology excellence. In Texas the progress of the Texas long-range plan for technology is required annually. The first progress report associated with this plan documents the State’s progress and accomplishments in meeting recommendations began in 2008. Identified in the report are the various collaborations and activities initiated by Texas public schools, regional education service centers, and the Texas Education Agency to work toward the goals outlined in the plan. This survey is to determine the progress schools are making toward Texas long range and district goals for technology. The plan has four domains: Teaching and learning, educator preparations and development, leadership, administration and instructional support, and infrastructure for technology. Schools from each district fill out the STaR Chart survey, but where is the accountability? When teachers complete the survey of the STaR Chart, how truthful are they when reporting on their use of technology in their lessons or do they realize how to evaluate the use of technology within their classroom. Teachers are presently overwhelmed with their current work load and do not realize how important it is that they stay current in the ever changing trends in technology and how to apply it in their classroom. My suggestion, after reading this report is to include the students’ help to introduce what technology they feel is most important and will help them learn in collaboration with their other classmates. These progress reports are valuable information to see where our nation is with technology, but we must but we must follow up with all stakeholders, but especially the students to see how they will learn with it.

Blog Posting One:

Of the four areas of the Texas Long Range Plan for Technology, 2006-2020: Teaching and Learning; Educator Preparation and Development; Leadership, Administration and Instructional Support; or Infrastructure for Technology, I have chosen to discuss the area of “Educator Preparation and Development” as it relates to my campus and district. My campus and district have made incredible gains to ensure all of our students and educators have access to a technology enriched curriculum. Technology with differentiation is infused into the lessons and the district offers professional development opportunities for our teachers to grow throughout the school year. At the campus level, educators learn about current technology software and teaching tools to develop their skills through after school share sessions. At each faculty meeting, fellow teachers share information about new technology and tools used in their classroom and often share web-sites and tricks they have picked up that may provide help for the students. Curriculum coaches also hold share sessions for team members to come together and learn new techniques from one another. School districts are proactive in providing technology skills to their students as well as encouraging educators to use differentiated technology lessons. They also encourage students to collaborate amongst themselves in teaching what they have learned through the use of school technology. Our educators are encouraged by campus and district administrators to explore and to help meet our goals by 2020. I feel that our district must continue to offer training to educators in order to ensure that all goals are met in regards to the Texas Long-Range Plan for Technology. My recommendations for improvement in the area would be for more teachers to be more receptive to the professional development offered to them and to fully embrace the use of technology on as many levels as possible.
